Stainless steel woven mesh is a common, critical component in screening, filtration, chemical engineering, and marine applications. Different grades of stainless steel vary significantly in chemical composition, corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and cost, directly impacting the mesh's service life and maintenance costs. This article will help you make a rational choice between 304/316/316L and 310S/904L grades.
First of all, from the perspective of material nature, 304 and 316/316L stainless steel wire mesh belong to the austenitic stainless steel family. The 316 series is superior to 304 in terms of pitting corrosion resistance and chloride corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content. 316L reduces welding sensitivity with a lower carbon content and is suitable for normal or medium temperature working conditions in the marine, chemical and food industries.

In contrast, 310S stainless steel wire mesh is designed for high-temperature environments and has good oxidation resistance; 904L is a high-alloy austenitic steel containing copper and high nickel, showing extremely strong resistance to pitting corrosion and acid corrosion, and is suitable for highly corrosive environments.
Corrosion resistance and temperature resistance determine the application scenarios of the two groups of materials. If the operating conditions are primarily seawater, salt spray, or chloride-containing media, 316/316L stainless steel woven mesh often offers a better price-performance ratio than 304. In more demanding acidic or chloride-containing high-temperature conditions, 904L, due to its alloy composition, can significantly extend service life. For long-term high-temperature operations, 310S is preferred due to its resistance to high-temperature oxidation.
