When selecting stainless steel wire mesh, the material is the primary factor determining performance and cost. This article provides a clear comparison of five common materials - 304/304L/316/316L/430 - in terms of chemical composition, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, weldability and machinability, and typical applications, helping engineers and purchasing personnel quickly make the most suitable choice.
Ⅰ. Chemical composition and basic characteristics
• 304/304L: Primarily austenitic stainless steel with 18%Cr–8%Ni; 304L is a low-carbon version (≤0.03%), reducing the risk of carbide precipitation after welding.
• 316/316L: Based on 304, 2–3%Mo is added to improve pitting corrosion resistance; 316L is also a low-carbon version, suitable for applications with high welding requirements.
• 430: A ferritic stainless steel with a high chromium content but no nickel. Its corrosion resistance and toughness are not as good as austenitic stainless steels, but it is low in cost and exhibits significant magnetism.
Ⅱ. Corrosion resistance comparison
1. Marine and chemical environments: 316/316L > 304/304L >> 430. 316 series stainless steel, due to its molybdenum content, offers significant resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chloride ions, making it the preferred choice for coastal and chemical environments.
2. General indoor/freshwater environments: 304 or 304L is sufficient for most rust prevention needs; 304L is more conducive to long-term stability after welding.
3. High sulfur or strong acid environments: Higher-grade alloys or special protective treatments should be considered; 430 is not suitable for long-term exposure.

Ⅲ. Mechanical properties and machinability
• Strength and Plasticity: 304/316 has better ductility and toughness than 430, and is easier to draw and shape when cold-worked into mesh; 430 has higher hardness, but is more brittle during processing.
• Weldability: The low carbon content of 304L and 316L significantly reduces weld sensitivity, making them suitable for large-scale welding of wire mesh and on-site splicing.
Ⅳ. Typical application scenarios
• 304/304L:Food machinery, food sieves, general filtration, building decoration; 304L is more suitable for welded structures.
• 316/316L:Marine protection, offshore platforms, chemical filtration, high-cleanliness applications in pharmaceuticals and food.
• 430:Interior decoration, structural components for low-corrosion environments, and low-cost guardrails, etc.
